GARUMEDANG -GEOSITE

The world class geological heritage was discovered on Damar - the richest tin deposit area in the island. These tektites are locally known as “satam” where were found in the same layer with the alluvial tin enrichment strata. Those tektites were firstly discovered by the Chinese tin miners from the alluvial tin operation in Belitong that as was reported by Van Dijk in 1879. Those were called those as “black diamond”.

The alluvial tin deposits discovery were reported by J.P. de La Motte (Belgian-French) in 1822 and were extracted since 1852 (Sujitno, 2015). The first alluvial tin mine in Damar was started in 1861(Aernaut, 1941).

This place offers you the best experience to explore the history of the tin mine which is connected with the “Billitonite” discovery. Those can bring you back to an ancient traditional mine to date.
